Launched – a Slightly tweaked control panel

When we came up with the concept for Little Warden, we planned that each person would add the Root URL and maybe a few subdomains and so we planned the backend and frontend to match this.

Well, it turns out there is a reason that all the startup books tell you to interview your customer base before you start to build stuff.

Turns out that Little Warden users like tracking pages as well as root domains and some of them like tracking 5000 or more pages on a single domain.

This has proved… interesting from a product perspective and whilst we’ve managed to make the product ‘work’ with this many URLs.. it wasn’t a great experience and certainly doesn’t fit in with the four keys that we try and run the company by.

Well, today I’d like to announce that we’ve launched the refresh of our internal system which means that URLs are grouped by domain or subdomain and you can quickly modify the checks and settings on a mass scale!

A change to our Search Console Importing

Today we’ve pushed out a small tweak to how we import URLs from Search Console.

The change comes down to how Google views ‘sites’ in Search Console for example;

These URLs would all be considered separate sites with GSC (or WMT as all the cool kids call it) and if we import 4 sites for the same URL then that just becomes a pain in the arse for everyone involved.

As far as Little Warden is concerned.. if you added the https:// version which renders, we check all the other URLs by default so there is no need to add them.

So from now on, we don’t import them automatically we just pick the one which renders and import that one (you can force these to be importing by switching auto sync to manual checks).

Papa’s Got A Brand New Changelog

Over the past few weeks, as well as eating cake and sponsoring conferences, we’ve been working on some backend changes to our system to enable things like hourly checking.

BUT it’s been a while since we launched anything VISUAL so I’d like to present to your our latest update – Recent Changes is now colour coded and in a timeline.

But Dom?

I hear you ask

This is just a Balsamiq mockup of the feature and not a screenshot of the application in situ

A very good point.

Well, If I wanted a screenshot of the website I’d either have to redact some customer data OR spend a few hours mocking up some fake changes on some generic websites and to be honest, not enough people read this blog to make it worthwhile and the mockup looks pretty close to the final feature

Well that makes total sense, thank you for your reasonable answer, I shall go and look at that feature now

No problem.

So head on over to and see whats happening. This report will also update your daily changelog to make it a bit easier to see and understand.

Happy Birthday Little Warden!

About a year ago we launched Little Warden to the public. So this week we had a little party to celebrate.

(Whilst we don’t have the marketing budget for big fancy parties we can invite all our customers to, we do have enough money to buy discounted party tat from Poundland and a caterpillar cake)

What a year it’s been for us, we’ve had over 20 feature launches, some simply wonderful tweets, mentions at conferences all around the world, sponsored a podcast and a conference and spent good marketing money on stupid stuff on Fiverr.

We (Heather, Scarlett and I) would like to thank every single one of our customers for their support, feedback and suggestions over the last year, we read every single tweet, email and live chat (well Scarlett doesn’t but we read the good ones out to her) and they really do mean so much to our family.

But more importantly, it wouldn’t be a birthday celebration without presents so here is ours.

Hourly checks are now enabled for everyone!

We’ve been testing this for a while now (mainly for scale) but when you add sites now, you get the option of checking hourly instead of daily, this feature suggestion has been one of the loudest we’ve received from customers since we started and now we feel confident in enabling it to all our customers at no extra cost. (we did initially think about doing this as an add-on, but that would have been a shit birthday present)

So what’s next?

We’ve got plenty set to launch in the next few weeks

  • A brand new website! (we had hoped to launch this for our Birthday but it turns out writing interesting marketing copy about rel=’canonical’ changes is hard)
  • Some UX and speed improvements in the application (Including the ability to mass-change checks on multiple URLs)
  • A Little Warden podcast (because what you needed to hear was more of me)
  • More Checks! (yep, the aim is to have 40 selectable checks by the end of the year)
  • More charity fundraising (like the Penguin Awards! Remember to get involved with those please!)
  • More event speaking (I’m speaking in September at BrightonSEO but I’m hoping to get a few more events in between, if you have an event and want a part time coder / part time comedian  to do a talk, get in touch.)
  • More family photos. (obviously)

So with plenty more to come, it’s time to put a close on year one.. and look forward to year two.

Thank you so much and have a magical day

Dom, Heather and Scarlett.

P.S. if you’d like to get US a birthday present, there are three ideas;

  • If you are a customer, please consider sending a tweet that we can add to our testimonials page.
  • If you are a digital agency or work in digital, please consider entering the Penguin Awards, they are 100% for charity and I’d like to raise £7500 this year.
  • If neither of those applies, we have a Just Giving page for the ‘stupid runs’ Dom is going to do this year (including one this weekend), please consider donating some scratch for Martin House Children’s Hospice.

Little Warden at #searchleeds

Last week we were proud to sponsor our first conference Search Leeds (having previously only sponsored a Rugby League Podcastand we survived to tell the tale!

This isn’t a review of the conference such as quality of the speakers, talks or even what any of the rooms looked like, as I spent most of the day on our table shilling our product to strangers but here is a bit of a run through of what we did.

With the help of Chris Lumb (as seen on Russel Howards Good News), We set up our stand for the day with various assortments of leaflets and giveaways (or as I like to call it – Conference tat)

We’d also put something a little special in each of the delegate bags, Haribo. we’ve been to enough conferences to know that everyone gives away pens and stickers.. but not too many people are willing to staple a business card to a pack of Haribo, especially not with over 1000 bags.

(I have a very very understanding wife)

But that’s the thing with Little Warden, we may not have the budget to give out Free Beer like SOME SPONSORS but we do have the budget to jump on the bandwagon and try and be entertaining.

It was lovely to speak to people about Little Warden, many of whom had no idea we existed (It’s as if my nearly 5000 twitter followers don’t immediately retweet everything I post)

Will we continue event sponsoring? I honestly don’t know yet, we spent a fair bit on tat, banner stands and tablecloths for this one so we will have to look to see if anyone signs up (hint.. please signup)

$50 on Fiverr – Viral Video (The Finale)

This is the final part in our $50 on Fiverr series, where we try to get our online marketing up to scratch by spending our ENTIRE budget on Fiverr, before we start you might want to start at the introduction.

Everybody wants to be a viral sensation these days, not everyone can get the videos of Charlie bit my finger, Gangnam Style or the newly released Royal Wedding Bad Lip Reading.

But I have a crisp $5 note (and $0.30 in processing fees) that says that we can create a viral video JUST AS GOOD.

Choosing the Seller

We actually started looking for this job when we first started the campaign, after all Fiverr has a viral videos section.

After a bit of searching (a lot of these are just a single video with the option to superimpose your logo on something which is not what we wanted at all) we found

How could you not!

I decided to break the rules of the challenge with this one and go for the Standard package and get the logo on the bottom of the ‘pie’.

Ordering Process

For once they didn’t ask us about the industry sector.

How many pies do you want? ($5 per pie)
If you have a short message, would you like it to be said before or after the pie hits?

A message or logo at the bottom of the pie is an additional $5.
A script to be said in the video is an additional $5.
Music in the background is an additional $5.

1 Pie please

Message after the pie – At Little Warden, we don’t know how to do AdWords retargetting, but we do know how to pay $10 for someone to get a pie in the face

Logo is here –

Thank you 🙂

And then we waited.

A day later we got an update!

Brilliant, this pie in the sky idea is going to happen! We are going to be a VIRAL SENSATION!.

Then we got another update.

Wait, what? who the hell is Brad and why is he so busy all of a sudden? Are you Brads manager? did he get a better gig? someone needs him for an urgent pie to the face gig in LA and it could lead to big stuff?

*sigh* Right.. let’s start this again.

There are a fair number of pie to the face jobs on Fiverr but one stood out..

I won’t paste the conversation but after a SLIGHT delay, we got our video and now the moment you’ve all been waiting for

And thats the end of our $50 on Fiverr series, if you’ve enjoyed it, consider buying our product so we’ve got the money to do stupid stuff like this in future, or at least join the mailing list.

We’ve got plenty of stuff planned including a new marketing campaign in a few weeks but we’ve got to take some time to concentrate on preparing for our first birthday (and the Penguin Awards)!

Introducing the Penguin Awards (the Digital Marketing awards nobody asked for!)

Today I’m taking a break from feature announcements and spending money on stupid marketing tactics and are announcing a brand new event for the digital marketing world… AN AWARDS CEREMONY!

Still with me?

The Penguin Awards are a digital marketing awards like no other, we celebrate the best (and not so best) of the industry with the aim of raising money for Charity.

Featuring categories such as

And my favourite

There is at least one category for everyone and with an entry fee of just £10 per entry, we want to be overwhelmed with entries, partly because we want to celebrate and have fun with the industry but more importantly

Every penny raised goes to the Martin House Children’s Hospice. That’s right, not every penny profit. Every penny given to us will go to the charity and Little Warden is covering all additional costs (website, streaming, trophies, postage)

Trophies? You want a trophy.. We’ve got trophies.. We’ve bought the BEST trophies that a ‘trophy joblot’ search on eBay has to offer and if you win, you will be the proud owner of a preloved cheerleader trophy with your name engraved over it.

Head over to and look at the categories and if you don’t feel like entering one then we have a special category just for you, it’s called the I really really want to win this award, award and you can bid for it on eBay in a month up until an hour before the ceremony starts.

Just a quick note from me personally to say how overwhelmed I’ve been with the support from the Digital Marketing community with this event, from a stupid idea on a drive home from a gig to a weekend landing page to now having over £2000 in donations from companies sponsoring categories in less than 5 days, things like this truly bring out the best in our industry

It is SLIGHTLY annoying that this one event has now raised more than the entirety of my running last year AND I’ve already committed to running this year. Had I known I could have sacked it all off and just done a live stream awards from my house I would have done that years ago.

I really hope you will enter the awards and enjoy the live stream, every entry makes a difference and I really need to get rid of this massive amount of trophies on my desk.

I’d like to send by saying thank you to our category sponsors, Little Warden, Kerboo, Sitebulb, Accountancy Extra, Sanity Check, ClockworkTalent, Polemic Digital, 10 Yetis, Biddable Moments, Stat, SERPmetrics, Deepcrawl, Many Minds and we’ve still got a few categories left if you’d like to get involved.

$50 on Fiverr – Press Release

This is part six in our $50 on Fiverr series, where we try to get our online marketing up to scratch by spending our ENTIRE budget on Fiverr, before we start you might want to start at the introduction.

Press releases are easy ways to get links” everyone says, well I want some of that, so what better thing to put to the test of our Outsourced Marketing Department.

I need a press release written about 500 words, we’ve already had some copywriting done so this should be a pretty simple job.

Finding the Seller

There are MANY MANY sellers of Press Release writing on Fiverr so we take our usual approach; Filter by those that will actually do the work for $5 (it’s getting harder) and then select the one with the best avatar.

This time we found a corker.

Look at this beautiful specimen of a man, if I wasn’t a happily married man with a child and a tortoise (and a wife that doesn’t read this blog) I’d be… anyway.

Jack, I’d LOVE to have you work on my campaign, let us get this order sorted..

But there is something that looks a LITTLE familiar about Jack..

Just a little, let’sread his BIO

Hmm that’s a bit strange, his bio says he lives in the USA but Fiverr says he’s from Nigeria! What a classic mistake! I bet he’s probably logged in when he’s on holiday visiting the Yankari National Park*.

Anyway, I still had something lingering in the back of my mind so I dug a little deeper.

And then we hit the JACKPOT

…Jack is actually Richard Madden!

He’s only bloody worked on Game of Thrones (and more importantly a Disney film or two!)

I’ve heard of actors using false names online to protect themselves from fanboys but the silly billy has forgotten to use a fake picture!

Order Process

Pretty standard order process, two questions

  1. What industry does this order relate to? (optional)

    Internet & Technology

  2. Hi, I will like prospective buyers to provide details, URL address or necessary information that will enable me deliver a unique and professional service required.

Hello, we’d like to have a press release written about our latest marketing campaign where we outsource all of our marketing to Fiverr.

This is the link to the start of the campaign and the links follow to the current progress.

Thank you and have a magical day

Two days letter we had our press release.

Richard. Richard Richard Richard, I’m starting to see why they killed you off in Game of Thrones.. You just don’t pay attention!

For a start, the company is called Little Warden!

I thought I might be overreacting to this job so I sent it to my PR buddy Andy Barr owner of Digital PR firm 10 Yetis**

“This isn’t a press release, this isn’t an article that could be placed in any credible title, this is not even a piece of content that could go in a newsletter… this is just evidence that Fiverr is not the place to go if you want professional written copy. I would say it is dog poo, but I feel that would offend the canine Media community.” – Andy Barr 10 Yetis

It’s hard to know what to say so let’s take some snippets;

Little Warden Writers have tripled in size since opening its doors
I mean that’s a bit personal, I admit I’ve put on a bit of weight but I’m working on it.
The undeniable facts are, space or opportunities not utilized cannot be created.
I think I need to be high to understand this
As a contemporarily marketing and outsourcing company
Is he talking about us?
I could go on but this article is already long enough as it is.
I was going to break the rules and ask for a revision but then I looked at Richards Wikipedia page and I thought, you know what, maybe he just needs the money.
So rather than do that I just sent him a quick message and closed the case on the Press Release
We’ve some budget left over so if you can think of any fiverr jobs that would work in this series or an area we should cover, ping them on twitter or comment on the blog (does anyone do that these days)
And remember

*no YOU googled Nigerian landmarks
** no he totally didn’t do it for an onbrand keyworded link
*** yes he did.

$50 on Fiverr – Social Traffic Generation (Facebook)

This is the fifth in our $50 on Fiverr series, where we try to get our online marketing up to scratch by spending our ENTIRE budget on Fiverr, before we start you might want to start at the introduction.

It’s time for us to get a bit of traffic to the website. I’ve been around the internet long enough not to fall for a ‘guaranteed 10,000 visitors to your website’ advert, they will just do a pop-under on a porn site (I guess, I mean I’VE never seen anything like that personally… but I’ve heard from friends).

So let’s look at some social love starting with everyone’s favourite place to buy personal data, Facebook.

Finding the Seller

Before we get into picking the seller, let me level with you. The main aim for us when building Little Warden (after paying for silly things like the mortgage and food and childcare) is to pay for our trips to Disney so when looking at social traffic we have to use our current conversion rate and package information to estimate value.

The first job that came to mind was one offering to share the post with over 375k peopleWoah, even if only 10% of those clicked through to the link that’s 37 THOUSAND visitors to the website, probably more than we’ve ever had, if we can convince 3% of those to buy Little Warden that’s 1125 Customers and based on our current customer profiles of Silver and Gold that’s £33,750 of new customers for a $5 investment!. I AM A MARKETING GENIUS!  I was already looking at flights and a Polynesian Village Bungalow for the week when I spotted another advert.

I will share your post with 500k fans, that’s almost DOUBLE the number of fans for the same price.. using the same maths as above I worked out that if the traffic and conversion rates were Just about right that would be £45,000 of brand new customers! At this point I was looking into the Florida property market and mortgages, I couldn’t believe nobody had tried this before!

Before I clicked buy it now.. my fingers started to tremble as a related job appeared.. I will promote your link to 20 million people. 20 million..  I did the maths;

Even accounting for a 5% CTR that’s still A MILLION visitors to the website and with an estimated 2% conversion rate on that traffic means – 20,000 customers! (and at an average package of Silver / Gold that would make a pretax income of £600,000. But greed got the best of me.. could we go higher.. is it possible to think bigger than 20 million visitors views on a link to my website.

Yes, it is FIFTY MILLION..  This was it, I had a great feeling about this gig. I brought Heather into the living room to help me with the numbers (she has a maths PHD which helps with numbers this large).

50,000,000 views on the post
5% CTR = 2,500,000 visitors to the website
2% Conversion rate  = 75,000 customers
£30 average package price – £2,250,000.

I was almost a millionaire! I could retire to Florida and spend my days riding the jungle cruise chuckling along to jokes about the backside of water. It was so close I could feel it.

I just had to place the order.

Once again I was asked for the standard industry questions as well as the link and a short description. I wasn’t born yesterday so I added a link so I could track ALL the links and visitors that came to my website.

Little Warden is a daily monitoring tool to keep an eye on the tedious things about running a website.

* Domain / SSL Expiration
* http -> https / www -> non www redirect checking
* Robots.txt change monitoring
* GeoRedirect checking

And over 30 other checks from less than $20 a month!

Kristen thanked me for my content but stripped out the link on the original post, NEVER MIND with the help of an expert in Google Analytics, I added some UTM stuff to the URL so I could track it!

Later that same day! Kristen sent me a message saying the job had been completed and my post was now live! She even included helpful screenshots. lots and lots of screenshots (available to download as a zip)

I Panicked! Little Warden is designed to scale but we couldn’t handle 2 million visitors now and certainly not 30,000 new customers, I needed to buy some more servers.

I decided to wait a few minutes for the first orders to come in before I purchased some more.

So I waited.

and waited.

and waited.

After an hour or two we still hadn’t had a customer, there must be something wrong with our payment gateway, I called them to check and they had no reported issues.

I decided to leave it and hope that everything would work better overnight, maybe I’ve got my time zones mixed up and it’s mostly Americans in the group who aren’t awake yet.

I checked Google Analytics the next day ..

We didn’t have 2 million visitors that day.
We didn’t get two million visitors that week.
We didn’t get 200,000 visitors
We didn’t get 20,000 visitors
We didn’t get 2000 visitors.

We got 2 visitors.

2 visitors.

I’m starting to lose faith in Fiverr for digital marketing.
